I have seen a couple of pics with ammo being carried that way, but that stupid clip kept falling out, I will never do that again. Next time I will have the ready ammo in a pocket!!!

Unless you're in a bit of a squeeze, it makes no sense to carry it that way IMO. Unless you're carrying extra, and even then, it'd likely be in your Feldbluse pockets, breadbag, gas mask tin/anyhere else you could secreet it...

GraemeMac, if you would be head of something , you would have to be a big "example" to the people under you. The Germans prohibited wearing grenades like that since early 43. That in combination with the clip on the pouch you would surely get the shit back then. Especially as a "Feldgendarme" you would be someone with all of their kit PERFECT. That means a closed collar too.

I disagree with the other comments. It may have been against regulations, but there are numerous examples of landser carrying additional rounds on the exterior of their pouches, and would think that pragmatism would have outweighed bureaucracy. I do caveat that I have not seen photos of feldgendarmerie doing this though. If you are going to lose anything, lose a few pounds, that would improve your impression immensely. I say that as I have carried a few extra myself!

Why? When you read veteran interviews (for example here: http://www.dererstezug.com/VetWegner.htm ) you find that Kettenhunde were usually well fed bastards (no offence ) that were a real pain in the ass when garrisoned, but rarely seen when the first shots rang
