Roosendaal 1944 was the first field event where FHF:s new british section participated. The main focus on this event was to dig in and hold the the thin frontline. We were blessed with unusual warm weather for october and we spent our nights in a period barn. Our german section portrayed a kampfgruppe from the 10.SS that had been rushed to the area to hold the line.

Very nice to see, and especially the town of choice, Roosendaal. Historicly accurate as there was Waffen-SS there in 1944. Hope you had some use of the Wartime map I scanned for you guys!

Not many photos from our side, but we did have a period 8mm cine camera filming throughout the event so we are keeping our fingers crossed on the result!

Sgt. Collins, No.5 Army Film & Photographic Unit

After Action Report of 29 of October 1944, Roosendaal, Holland.

Morning, 0530 hours.
I was assigned to the carrier platoon when the 2nd battalion moved up to its new positions near the German
lines. We were late as it was soon time for the morning stand to when the Germans mostly attack our lines.
We waited for the first light. Fog.



No attack came and the section took a quick patrol in the surrounding area to clear out any German scouts
and to familiarize themselves to the area. No enemy contact.
When we came back, Ashley had the breakfast going on the no 2 burner. We took it in shifts to eat, dig
and keep a lookout.



We started improving our foxholes. I was assigned a foxhole with private Weeks, a tall, slim chap who liked a
good conversation just as much as a good smoke. We started in shifts as the sun came up.
The Germans surely heard us but they could not see us, and they clearly new that we both gained from a lull
in the constant mortar fire. The ground was filled with rocks and roots and the axe was frequently used by
the whole section more than the shovels.



Noon, 1230 hours.
The morning passed without incident and it was not until after lunch that we heard "Contact!". Private Barker
had been on post and came running back towards our foxholes, we saw smoke grenades going off on the field
at our left flank. We opened up through the smoke and the Germans quickly retired. They were testing our
defences. An hour later orders came through via orderly, we were to patrol the area in front of our lines
and look for enemy equipment and troops.



We advanced to the road 250 yards in front of our positions without a hitch and started to move towards the
presumed German positions from the right flank.





We approached the hill though a wooded area and got really close until we were spotted. Weeks threw a smoke grenade to cover our assault but it
did not ignite. Stuck half in the open and with the Germans holding the high ground we had to fall back.







We took a different direction home as we had not encountered any of the Germans heavy weapons and that they might be in an ambush position near
our own lines. We advanced through or own flank and found that it was clear of enemy's.



Back at our lines it was time for tea.
