Soldbuch photos

Post by Peter Bauer »

Hey everyone!

I'm just going to abuse your knowledge on this subject... :P

Was there any kind of rules that one would have to know about the photos in soldbuchs? Like, was it supposed to be of certain size and were you supposed to wear certain clothes in the photos? If you have any good period examples, I'd love to see as many as possible!

Can't help you with the official rules on this but I do know that you were suposed to have no hat on (despite the fact that I have seen the odd soldbuch photo with a hat on).

I know the left ear had to be shown in the photo...but lots of example show otherwise!

Here is a great site with lots of revelant information regarding Soldbuchs in general...

Hope this helps!

best wishes, Paul.

Don´t know what the official rules were, but HERE you can see a list of soldbücher/wehrpässe fotos (not all are click-able).

Der Erste Zug has a very comprehensive article on the Soldbuch, including the numerous variations of photographs

Don't forget, ESP. If you are doing early to mid war you don't need a photo.
Even after the order in 1944 to include a photo some books never got one added.

I´ve added some more soldbücher to my list.

The order came in late 1943, but most soldbücher didnt got a photo untill middle 1944.
Some very early.. some very late. And ofcourse some never got one.
I believe the Kriegsmarine had photos in them from the start, but i´m not sure.

HERE you can see a late war soldbuch with a paper glued in it stating that there is no photo due to the lack of materials.

Interesting, I always thought it came after the bomb plot.

Oh wow, great information, most of it new to me! Thank you very much!

This topic would probably fit better under the Paperwork part though? :)

The order came on 16 November 1943.
It was ordered that all training units had to have a photo in the Soldbuch before 1st April 1944.
Combat units had to have a photo in it before 31 December 1944.

I checked it, and the Kriegsmarine had pictures in it from september 1941.

There was an order after the attempt to kill Hitler that all ID´s had to have a photo fixed to be legal.
And as Soldbücher/Wehrpässe allready had a photo, it was more meant for other kind of (temporary) ID´s.

The photo should be developed on photographic paper anyways...not printed on.

Hmmm........ Maybe thats a little project for the future. Develop and print soldbuch photos for people.
Be a pessimist and never be disappointed.
