Quite a varied Wochenschau but at 04:54 shows use of a Schnorkel by a U-boat

The date was something of a guess Cam >:)
Nice footage of the flak RK award - RAD troops and the dual 10x80 sighting device. ( A Flakrichtgerat40a used in searchlight direction / sound location systems.

This one from the same site also holds some nice footage.

Some words from my uboot vet Edgar on the schnorkle. He remarked that when they were running submerged with the schnorkle up sometimes a wave would come over the schnorkle or the boat run a little too deep and the schnorkle would close and the deisels would start sucking the air from inside the boat and he said your ears would start popping and sealed tinned food cans would start pinging and then when the schnorkle broke the surface the effects would start again as the pressure returned to normal.

I can echo that Harold , my late father remarked to me that he met a number of Ex-U-Boatmen durring the transfer opf Bpoats to Scotland and Lough Foyle - quite a number had damaged eardrums - they too gave the same explaination .
When you consider it these poor lads had death as a constant companion , never more than a heartbeat away.
