what would be the side arm of a mg34 /42 gunner

Post by warren007 »

I have been looking at a number of photos and books etc it seems some MG34/42 gunners carried a side arm and some didnt was it regulation for a side arm to be carried and would it have been a P38 or was any of the german pistols an option

Yes, it was standard issue to have a pistol. It was the only weapon that you could use for self defence, if need be. It was standard 9mm issue, mainly P08 Luger or P38.

yes, pistols produced under occupation or captured were put into service. But always 9x19 due to supply reasons.

If you served in the German army of the period your 'side arm' was your bayonet?

Forget this P08 Luger rubbish, standard issue for the Wehrmacht was the P38 plain and simple.

I know a Hermann Goring vet who was an MG42 gunner & fought on the Ostfront and both he and his Asst.gunner carried the P-38

slightly off topic, i fired p07, p38 and ppk in berlin 2005, most stable was the p38, and less likely to jam.

Schutze 1 and 2 carry a pistol, schutze 3 carries ammo and a rifle.

All sorts of weapons where issued. Most likely the P38. On second place come the P08 and P35(b) which I prefer most of my guns. A 14 round magazine is a good bet when you're having close encounters with others...
