canvas action/breech cover fitting

Post by Pyotr »

I recently bought a breech cover from a repro dealer, that seemed to be more matching than others. It has a felt (not seemingly horse hair felt, but...) and was greenish in colour. Over all, it fairly closely matches pictures of originals. I have never seen an original in hand or a photo of one being used in the field, and because of that I would normally be reluctant to use it, But, Unlike the German soldier, I have to buy my own 98 mauser. SO, I like to protect it at night, when not being used, or when just being carried around a public event.

My main question is this- My cover does not fit snugly around the wrist of the stock or at the front end around the sight. It will protect against sideways mud and dust, but not when carrying the rifle on the shoulder, or when leaning against a rest in camp. Is it too big , or is this correct? Anyone have a photos showing an original in use on a 98K?

Suggestions if this is not the way they should fit?
