Dang....lol...the shovel I understand..for digging in. Above ground is a bad place to be. But did sanitators carry bayonets?

bayonets- remember- a German soldier is armed, and sani carried pistols. They were standard as far as I can tell. I have photos of sanis with carbines. I may have photos with bayonets, but can't look through my hard drive now. I'll try later.
some literature says they pulled guard duty around field hospitals and may have in doing this, been with the MGs. I think it is US (Also UK?) troops that really stayed away from weapons with medical troops.

I know they carried pistols on the eastern front for sure, I've seen entry's in original sani Soldbuchs, and when they left the front, the pistols were returned, ans the entry's crossed out in red pencil. The Russians weren't participating in the Geneva convention and routinely shot Sanis. I just always thought bayonets were a riflemans item..but if it's standard issue for all troops then I'll have to get one.(right now I have a czech Mauser bayonet, but it has the ring) I know that under the Geneva convention, medics had the right to defend themselves and those in their care..I'd be interested to see some photos though when you got a spare moment.

I would say the bayonet would be carried often enough, it's not just for sticking people with the pointy end, it's a handy tool as well.
