Afternoon All,
I'm looking at repainting my mess tins, is it best to strip them back to bear metal and if so how is the best way to do this?
Kind regards in antcipation,
Ged

Re: Mess tin paint?
I've always stripped mine of any remaining paint, Nitromors or other proprietary paint stripper and steel wool, then a good rinse in warm water with a little detergent before drying and painting. When it gets abraded and scratched it doesn't reveal 'old' paint underneath then!

Re: Mess tin paint?
Considering the huge variation of colours that we see in original uniforms and uncamo'd helmets, is there any reason to think that mess tins wouldn't also have the same variances?. Oberschnaepser's pictures seem to demonstrate this (I'm assuming they're all wartime originals).
I doubt if every tin came out of the factory in the exact shade of computer-mixed RAL7006 that we know today, but that doesn't make it "all wrong" as a colour.

Thats right as well!
Right..exept of one, all original/unissiued..
..but for example my last mess tin was consisting of different makers (C&CW / MN) but it has both the same year "37"..and has 99% same early fieldgrey painting. For me thats a Good example of early, good, exact, german paint-economy ..

No, standard vehicle paint prior to 1943 switch to Dunkelgelb is dark grey RAL 7021. Variously known as "Dunkelgrau", "Schwarzgrau" or "Panzergrau".pepperpot wrote:is this the same RAL number for vehicles pre 1942? i have to repaint my BWM "copy"

Re: Mess tin paint?
For US the best bet for German field color paint is as follows
Rustolem deep forrest green =field grey green I have seen original mess tins painted in this color. (add black for darker colors helmets gas mask cans ammo boxes.
Rustolem auto primer is very close to panzer grey also late war helmets.
Rustolem olive drab is also a good color for mess kits.
If you are good with a hobby brush you can add black for darker field green paint.
Add a lacquer coat for gloss and durability. It will turn a satin finish for shiny mess tins use gloss coat.
Add to a disposable paint sprayer available at lows.If you would like to see pictures of things I have painted I would be glad to post.
I have access to many originals and this paint is pretty close.
The also make a ordnance tan color.
I think It is called sand .
These paints are available at Wal-mart
Try them out.I have seen a lot of original items and almost none of them match perfect.
