A WH vet looks at all the period stuff which you've collected over the years to make your breadbag more "orfentic" and declares:
"We never had any of that stuff at the front"
and then wistfully remembers once getting a can of sardines from a captured Russian store (note: ONCE )

His response was "where were we supposed to get this stuff from?"
His experience was limited to 12th Army in 1945 so maybe they had run out of pretty much everything by then. He has stories of being in a US PoW cage that will make your hair curl

If you read up on the food supply you will see that they were issued food at night and sometimes in the morning. They never had loads of food to carry round in their breadbags. Perhaps you should look at filling your breadbag with a toque, gloves, fettdose, cleaningkit, esbit cooker, ebsteck, and a bandage or 2.

indeed, a NSKK vet told me they got the schokokola when they had to guard at night... ONE tablet!
Another vet told me they got ersatz coffee and when it froze minus 40, they saw it in small blocks and heated it in the pockets and then put in in their mouth like bon bons.
