Right, something weird is happening.... got the flag and took the bolt out. Now the next job is to release the little pin so I can unscrew the safety mechanism. Well, the pin releases but the mechanism doesnt unscrew and from what I can see it never will as it doesnt look like a normal K98 mechanism. Also, the catch as far as I can make out will only ever be able to sit in one place and never rotate so somethings amiss I feel.

Been trawling the net and it would seem I have an earlier bolt, so Im bolloxed  Still, Ive a nice safety flag to use as a paperweight!

Hi Barry,if the safety flag is missing, the bolt will lock, the bolt must be cocked and the flag must be in the upright position before it will unskrew.here is some pictures from a 1936 manual

I can cock and dry fire the rifle, but the whole mechanism looks different to the one shown.

LOL, yes its a K98 for sure

Heres a pic, note the bolt sticking out which prevents the safety flag I have from rotating if fitted.

Heres the same with bolt fully pulled back.

And heres the mechanism, if I depress the pin it rotates anti clockwise through 90 degrees and thats it, thee appears to be no thread?
