tank engage ment in north africa

Post by von papen »

this is just a wee bit from my late gramps battle report, "another mark 4 appeared over the rise and was hit on the cupola by major welchs 2 ponder. it immediantely went backwards down the hill and at least one man baled out"

a two pounder managed to force back a panzer 4?, this is in 1943 by the way

suppose depend`s on which variant of pz 4?proberly a D OR F as cuppola would be the early type, also depend`s on who`s driving it?might have run scared, thought may have done more damage to the tank?

One bloke may well have bailed out to inform others of the situation, but the tank could well have been servicable/in-action.

If the radios were dead it makes sense that one of the crew may have "bailed out" to inform the squadron commander of the situation.

Does anyone remember seeing the images recently of the Warrior crew in Iraq? Some of them bailed out when the outside of the vehicle was petrol bombed.....Even though it was likely to be safer to remain inside the vehicle. Armoured vehicles are extremely vunerable to infantry attacks due to the lack of vision, and so in-experienced crews can become panicky and bail out. If the 2pdr hit the cupola and damaged the commanders vision from inside the vehicle then the crew may well have bailed out because they were panicky. The account doesnt have anymore detail upon what happened does it? At the moment your guess is as good as mine as to what may have happened.

nah it dont say any more than that, but just before that a panzer 4 took out a brit tank probably was a churchill or matilda, thats what the north irish horse was equiped with mainly

it may have been damaged by the brit tank and the 2 pounder could of hit a weak part of the tank

I believe Tom was merely confirming your promulgation of the palpable.
