I have seen ads lately on the TV over here where you can take almost anything in to the store and they can scan it and match paint to your sample. The showed people with stuffed animals, pictures, and all sorts of things and the salesman keeps saying "yup we can match that color". If it does work then be a simple task of having a swatch or color chip or even an orginal helmet with original color intact and bingo you get the correct matching paint

True Harold, I did this a couple of years ago with an M35 helmet...in an auto paint shop, but acrylic paint these days seems to be rubbish that peels off rather than chips- and I'm talking auto acrylic. Enamel is hard to find. Maybe my application and spraying methods for acrylic were wrong, I tried it on dozens of occasions, but same result. every time I went to weather it a bit the paint peeled off in sections ratheer than chipping like original paint should. Bloody frustrating, just when you think you have a great shade or finish, it all goes to hell in a handbasket!
I bit the bullet and just use the RAL colours in spraypacks from zeltplane.com now.

A couple of associated notes- the rough factory applied texture used on mid- late war helmets is aluminium filings or grindings. Sand was used in the field for field re-paints.

No primer was used on German helmet paint- this is a pain in the arse for authenticity because many modern paint will not or has difficulty sticking to bare shells. See the comments above re buying acrylic paint!

Hope this helps.

I think I'm right in saying that factory finishes were mixed with zinc, which helps the paint stick to bare metal, and obviates the need for a primer....?

I used a rather farby thin matt black undercoat, good thing is it the top layer chips off rather than peels and because its so thin youd never know it was there.

Its better than having a non undercoated helmet which looks akin to a half peeled orange

This is what I did on this helmet I just finished:
1. painted a layer of flextone paint and let it dry
2. panted 2 layers of feldgrau paint
3. added layer of mud and let it dry
4. added layer of ordinance tan paint from 1944 Militaria and let it dry
5. went around the edges roughly with steel wool and the dome of the helmet lightly with the wool
6. got it slightly dirty again
7. painted over it with matte clear
8. Added a net with a Don Calder liner

thank for the comment :D

I'm fitting the liner from the Spearhead helmet, this shell is replacing.

Just never got on with the Barry Lyndon shell/liner positioning.

I pre-tried the liner with this shell, before prep and painting, much happier

I'll post some more pics, hopefully towards the end of the weekend
