Looks like a major restoration project you are undertaking.

What's the background story to the helmet and where was it found?

The helmet (at least I hope there is a helmet buried under there) was dug out of the Ardennes by English relic seekers, at least I think that is the term for them. They found a number of helmets, along with other gear in what appeared to be a German depot site that had been shelled by US guns. As you can see the liner is mostly intact, though I doubt I can save the leather but you never know. I will post photos as the process continues. Stay tuned.

update: rust removal is going fairly well. Hammerite gel and careful use of a wire brush, starting to see metal showing through.
