I was at a local body shop recently who use/mix RAL colours but they were struggling to find RAL 7028 in the system, oddly enough RAL 7028 did not appear on the RAL swatch cards either.

Does anyone know if 7028 has been discontinued? - the nearest match I could find was 'currygelb' RAL 1027 however this was slightly 'lighter' in shade

I'm in the same boat as you right now, for RAL 8020.

Modern day RAL is different from War-time colours. And even throughout the war, the Same RAL number would undergo various changes, as the war exigencies was the driving factor in the paints. RAL7028, like other tan colours (RAL 8020 - the common afrika colour) was discontinued. Modern Day Tan, is in the 1000s range but is no match to wartime colours. It often requires manual mixing techniques.

What codes/colours have you used to get the correct looking 'dunkelgelb' The guys at the paint shop are quite accommodating so if I asked them to mix a few colours I don't see it being a problem.

For interest, the base of this shell was done in 1027

7028 hasn't existed in the RAL charts for many years. Wartime formulations are the 43 spec (a bit more yellowy buttery) and the revised 44 formulation (a definite beige shade).

Warpaints sell a "German sand" which has been matched to the 43 version, other companies have matched the 44 beige, mostly German companies though:

Kommiss do it but I can't seem to get on their site now. 1944 militaria in the States etc.

Others sell it but a poor match, best to see some samples if at all possible. Swatches online are useless due to the vagaries of colour rendition on PCs.

If you want your local supplier to match, try to find an ammo tin or verbandkasten that has been painted inside, as that won't have faded or weathered like a 60 year old external finish.
