The only ones I know of are the Indian Depeeka helmets. Sold on Ebay by a firm that also sells a lot of medieval armour. Only problem is they only come in a size 60.

I'd go with the Pirschen one, I have seen several repro's now and the Sturm ones are bad in all ways. I don't like the Deepeeka ones either, very odd shape. Either go with a repainted pirschen helmet or a refurbished original!

I only would go for the best repro there is....an original one

Pirschens M35 (he doesn't carry M40s) is a size 68 shell only. If you use that size, the replica is very nice indeed. His M42s are a bit lighter than the originals.

Hi,
The more I 'm following here, so get more pleasure, once again design a Zib helmet :

Do you think: "Aus Oma´s Truhe" ?

With the 60 size of the liner is meant. Which is so cheap but he is not portable.
Cheers Ingo

Bump for more recent feedback on the repro M40s?

I've heard Finnish M40/55 shells are fine...and I've also been told in no uncertain terms to stay away from them completely. Talk about confusing. Tack on the plethora of repros available on eBay, and I'm more confused than ever as to what to buy.
And yes, I agree nothing would beat an original, but I can't afford an original 68/60 M40 and still put the entire kit together, so I'm in search of a stop gap until I can replenish my reenacting funds.
Any help or advice would certainly be appreciated!

Not sure whether they would class as the "best" repros available, but www.ahagreat.com stocks a selection of M35/40/42 shells in the $60-65 range. I have two that I use for airsoft, and they are quite solid pieces - weight of about 1.5kg, robust liner, and a chinstrap that is NOT as thin as a shoe lace.
