New restoration project

Post by Mauser »

Hi all!

A friend of mine brought me a present this morning - M40 helmet shell. The shell is painted black (which will be stripped, of course), and apart from being rusty from the inside, it has a nasty 2" long crack on the top of the dome, together with a few small holes.

As I already said, I intend to sandblast the helmet in order to strip the paint and rust, but here's the question: Should I fill the holes and cracks with car filler, or should I try to weld the crack?

Any suggestions and opinions are more than welcome!

Thanks!

You will have a job welding the crack - it's manganese steel if I'm correct and will be a devil to pull together - Better to fill it.

Thanks for your answer!

If you think welding will show as a difficult task, considering the structure of the helmet, then I'll just use some strong polyester fiber putty.

After the completion, I'll post some photos.

Cheers,
