Take ral 6006 give it a few %9011 or panzergrau, take dull coath.
Add some aluminumoxide in your spray-gun for texture.
succes damit!
Re: M42 Painting
I always thought 6006 was a green?
I might have missed something, but I thought Herr Valkyrie was after grey?

Re: M42 Painting
Is it for a Heer helmet or an SS one?
If it is a Heer helmet, it is a myth that they were grey, apart from during a very brief period between 27th January 1940 - 21st March 1940, when orders called for helmets to be painted in smooth , matt, slate grey , with double decals - this applying to some very late production M35s, well before M42s were in production. (Very few helmets seem to have been painted in this slate grey, even during the period the order was supposedly in force.) By the time M42s were in production, it was, as stated above RAL 6006, which was described as "Dark Field Grey", but is actually a dark green colour...
If it is an SS helmet though, then they did more often tend towards a dark grey colour (although many were in RAL 6006 as per Heer helmets), but many late helmets did have a dark slate grey colour - I've never been able to establish the rAL colour for sure, but possibly RAL 7015, or RAL 7024? RAL 7021 was an early vehicle paint, and could also have been used for field repaints of earlier helmets..
Remember though that making an exact match is not important, as wartime paint varied massively between batches, and no two German helmets are the same colour.
I did a late war SS M42 a few years back, and I used Tamiya XF69 "NATO Black" as the colour (actually comes out a dark grey). Here you go:

It's realy hard to express colours and to talk about it.Walther wrote:I always thought 6006 was a green?

You are right 6006 is a grau-dark green colour
What he need is not a ''grey'' colour but more a dark-grey colour.
If you take 6006 and add some black you will get a nice late dark-grey colour.
The late-war ss helmets are almost black, very easy to duplicate.
@ Jagdpanther: A nice late-war ss colour!
Just howe i see it,hopefully it helps.
Re: M42 Painting
Here's my repro M40 done in the SOF "Field-grey" colour, it is lighter in the pics
but in reality is quite darker almost black slate, the decal was from the USA supplier
who does distressed decals??

Re: M42 Painting
I recently got a m42 shell, and since i painted my current helmet in RAL 6006, i want to paint this one in a darker late ss shade.
I know that RAL 7021 was an early vehicle color, but wouldn't it work for this purpose?
Since there was such a big variation of shades, i think this would be within the bounds. Opinions?
I won't use any model paints, so no need to sugest any shades from tamiya or the like
Spraygun and industrial paint is the only way to go

Re: M42 Painting
For me 'slategrey' or 'feldgrau' is the same,it's just howe you see it.
If you think the 6006 is to green you can mix it (few %) with 7021 or 9011.
I would not use only 7021 for a latewar helmet colour..
the ral 7021 will give a bit more 'grau' the ral 9011 will give it a more 'darkgrey' finish.
Don't forget the texture!
The only 'late'war colour i can find is 6006...

Re: M42 Painting
Well i don't think Ral 6006 is too green, i just don't want to have two M42's in the same color
Ok, so Ral 9011 would be better then.
Don't worry, i have enough aluminum oxide to do at least 10 helmets, so i'm all set
I might try to mix some 6006 and black, since i have quite a bit of it left.

Re: M42 Painting
Try this " FELDGRAU AGED exact color "
http://decalhelmet.com/description.php?id=238&path=18
I have used it on one of my helmets. Recommended ! I didnt add texture to it though, just hand painted it.

Brrrrr,that paint shines like hell.
And the colour itself isn't like the original paint.

Re: M42 Painting
'Feldgrau aged', is that 6006 that looks instantly old when freshly applied to the shell?
Re: M42 Painting
Well, i guess they wanted that. It doesnt get as old as in their picture, just a bit darker than normal. I couldnt get my pictures to show it perfect. I liked the color anyway. It dries quick for touching, but completely dry takes ~ 10 or 14, days and surface is hard. Not like cheap spray paint.
