Sand will do fine, but the texture will be more coarse.

I used a salt shaker to apply the aluminum oxide to the wet paint of my helmet. I found it more controllable than applying by hand. Because its applied onto wet paint, you can wipe off any thick or heavy areas by hand and reapply to maintain a consistent coating.

If you choose to take sand,use the sand wich you use for birds(on the floor)......
That coarse can be used though......
