I was looking in my ref; books and it was not usual to have insignia on helmets in WW1,but the skull&cross bones badge was used by freikorps units later on,could it be from one these units?,I assume the Nr3 was the company number.Anyway a nice and interesting piece.

Kamerad Brigadefuhrer - this was what I was subtly driving at - I too have a nice and interior complete (although damaged) Apfelgrun M16 Stalhelm which has large Hakenkreuzen scratched on to either side - The belief being it was used as a Friekorps helmet during the "transitional period".
Mine has the white pigskin liner tongues and one still has the original horsehair padding inside. I find the colours on Herr Peiper's helmet very strange as I have not seen blues and greys used before. The totenkopf motif on the side as opposed to the front is VERY unusual.
Herr Peiper - where did you obtain this interesting item? and do you have any provenance with it?

In my book,Freikorps Hacketau used this emblem, but it is painted on the front, very large for all to see.On peipers example,am I right there is a 'W' under the deathshead, which I would assume would be the Kaiser?.The 1st Footguards reg;and the 1st guards signal battallion(Gardekorps)used a Hohenzollern crest,a shield divided into four quadrants white/black over black/white in WW1.Other than that the deaths head is associated with cavalry or Hussars.
