Italian camo uniforms used in 116. and 130. Panzer-Division?

Post by Hindus »

Hello,
is it true that before the battle in Normandy, soldiers from 116.Panzer Division and 130. Panzer-Lehr-Division got a big quantity of Italian camo (Millano M29) cloths?

Thanks in advance
Best regards

UUmmm, Not sure about that one,
I have read up on Lehr and in any of the books I have there is no mention of this, and no pics of any lehr grenadiers sporting the italian camo, (only splinter and feild grey)
I think the 12th SS were given alot of italian camo at Normandy.
I'll have another look in my books and find out.

Now I have evidence that before the battle in Normandy, clothes in Italian camo (Milano M29) was wide distributed in 116. Panzer division and in 21. Panzer Division, so I’m almost sure that this type of camouflage was also used in Panzer-Lehr.

Best regards

In your many books does it mention the amount of Land Rovers and unconverted Motorcycle combos (with indicators) that were issued to Panzer Lehr before or after they were wipped out by Typoons because they were out sunbathing in there pants? :D :D :D

Would you care to share your evidence of the 116th in italian camo?
I've not seen any pictures yet that show 116th in much camo at all never mind italian. There are the ones of them in splinter parkas taken from some film footage but thats about it.
This could be the start of a new page for 116th re-enactors.

Agreed, the source of this revelation would be most appreciated!

Well, I dont like to be picky but one picture of an officer in a tailor made jacket or combi really does not constitute grounds for a claim that the 116th were issued large quantities of italian camo before d-day.
I think anyone would want more evidence than that before making a claim.

Thanks for the picture Hindus but I agree with Stigroadie on this one, I think we would need more evidence to prove that it was issued on a large scale amongst the Division as a whole.

Sorry to kick an old topic, but didn't saw it before...

Is there some more evidance of the Italian camo used in the 116?
And why would I ask for that...

That one photo is still the only one I have ever seen of 116th in Italian camo.
There is some footage of them wearing splinter smocks. They are troops with a Demag half track with 2cm on the back. Said to be in Holland around Operation Market Garden time, so mid/late September '44.

Incidentally a Flakpanzer 38T is under restoration in the UK. I am directly involved in mounting a live Flak38 on it.
