Evening,
We know canned bread was widely used as part of a German soldiers ration in WW2. Along with fresh bread and 'semi fresh' aka Knackebrot and Dauerbrot. Once I started to look into it, it seemed to be uncharted ground across the scene. Many not knowing canned bread was still available to purchase, I certainly didn't and considered making my own. I'd like to share my findings with you.
A few options were available from the outset, B&M canned bread from the US. Which is a long ribbed can and not ideal. Secondly, 1980's/1990's Bundeswehr bread. Which is in a short ribbed can, with printed markings on the top. Not ideal and although edible not advisable or a sustainable source. Then I found 'Schiffsbrot'. A brand new canned bread from Germany. Short but unfortunately ribbed can. No printed words and factory fresh! The most accurate and sustainable out of the 3 feasible options.
The bread itself is extremely dense and heavy for it's size. Very filling with one can feeding 3 people. Can be eaten with sweet or savoury food.
The best thing...since canned bread!

It's covered in sunflower seed I believe. Also available with Hazelnut. They cost £5.95 per can.
