Lice

Post by Botty »

In lots of military books body lice are often referred too.

Most participants in WW2 would have never seen a louse in civilian life, coming as they did from fairly well established civilised societies. Equally, I never come across baby lice and think 'oh time to change my clothes now'.

So where do they come from?

Plenty of people from poorer backgrounds would have been well aware of what a louse looked and felt like. In fact, one of the (few?) positive effects of the Third Reich was a rigorously enforced public health campaign that made them far less of a threat.
You and I don't have body lice because we bathe regularly, which strips off the nutritious layer of oil, dead skin and, erm, stuff that nourishes the louse. The unfed louse, just hatched out, is near invisible to the naked eye (there are probably some in your carpet now), it's only when it starts to feed that it seriously bulks up. Give it cold weather and it will happily nest in the seams in your clothes and share your warmth.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share that with you.

The british army in WWI had de louseing wagons just behind the front line .The sauna is one of the best ways of getting rid of the little guests as you can sit in the Hot sauna and get the guests from out of the seams of your cloths on way was with a hot iron or knife there was allso a powder can remember the name some one will

A substitute for lice is the common flea like on cats and dogs. Find an alley cat put your wool tunic and trousers in a large cardboard box add the alleycat and leave them together for a cpl hours now you will have an infested uniform and will have the real feel of being lousey... for purests only.... lol
