German Toothpaste

Post by paulmfjr2 »

What did it look like(I presume it was the powdered stuff in tins), does anyone have any pics or know where I can find a suitable modern alternative?

Thanks.

I have a wartime Colgate box! Price is in RM...

I'm afraid the only picture I have is the one below, thougfh I'll get a better one for you. I've also got a couple of the sold toothpaste powder blocks. I have seen a smokers' toothpaste powder in Boots, not sure if it's the same compressed block or a loose powder though.

Also, have a look here in the last 5 items: http://www.ostfront.com/Merchant2/merch ... Toiletries

Yes, it's an original one to an Oberzahlmeister Rothe of the 73rd Infantry Division.

I believe a cloth bag similar to the type used for ammunition and rations. Thre were also private purchase sets which came in leather bags, tins etc. that some men used.

mhh i was under the impression that the germans didnt have toothpaste until after the war. imho they used toothpowder. i know the first toothpaste was sold in germany in 1907. will try to look that up a bit better. maybe they used toothpowder in the war due to material shortage...

maybee a strange question, but how do you use it?

- dry powder on a wet toothbrush and rub you teeth? (my best guess?)

Wet the toothbrush, rub it on the powder block then clean teeth as normal. I occasionally use a powder/solid toothpaste when I find it in the shops.

Ostfront had some Rosodont on the site a while back - and Colgate still does Zahnpulver. In fact Google Zahnpulver.....

Tooth powder was apparently banned in the Netherlands because if you used too much of it, your enamel would wear off.
