Food cans

Hi all,
Quick question, was there a particular colour that I can paint food cans? This is for meat, sausages, sardines or whatever... where they a particular colour/s?

a dark green color with a really shiny lacquer on them would approximate wartime cans.
Cans rarely had labels on them, contrary to popular belief.

If you're talking about canned food for the German army then I disagree massively. Standard issue DIN ration cans like canned bread (yuck) were unlabelled but in a metallic gold colour or tin plated like modern cans. Unlike modern cans they were straight sided rather than ribbed and are are therefore very hard to fake up with modern cans. A few were issued in blackened steel. Pretty much all the other canned food that was procured by the Wehrmacht came from civilian sources and would have had civilian labels.

Might want to get your hands on a copy of RATIONS OF THE WW2 GERMAN WEHRMACHT by Jim Pool, Vol. 2 of which is due out from Schiffer publishing in a few months....loads of info there.....good luck......best, rich
