No ss didn't wear sumpf
Re: parka in the Tan and Water Sumpftarn camouflage
Research....you're doing it wrong
You're looking for a mouse grey parka, oakleaf spring or autumn, or blurred edge.
I personally like grey, or a mix and match if you're getting trousers too. Or better yet....a greatcoat!

Re: parka in the Tan and Water Sumpftarn camouflage
thanks for the replies. I have a great coat but i just thought a parka would be good for battles, its hard running about in a great coat. But much appreciated you pointing me in the right direction.
Many Thanks

Remember unless its properly f*cking brass monkeys, you wouldn't of been issued a winter parka. It's a better impression to have a great coat, layered ontop of a tunic, ontop of a jumper, etc, etc. If nothing else it lets you remove layers as and when(you will....) start to sweat. Any effort in a parka in our climate, and you will sweat like mad, even on a 'cold day'. Once you've moved about a bit, generated heat, sweat, etc, and stop. You will then freeze. Been there, done it, many times

Waffen ss were not issued reversible cammo in the west (a few pictures in Alsace at the end) so it depends on your groups impression or the event your attending

Does that mean those involved in the Ardennes offensive wouldn't have had reversible parkas and trousers?ssparatrooper wrote:Waffen ss were not issued reversible cammo in the west (a few pictures in Alsace at the end) so it depends on your groups impression or the event your attending

Try finding photos of them so dressed.
All the famous photos show the SS in Pea over wools and greatcoats or captured US raincoats.

Every days a school day. I ask not from a re-enactment point of view but a military modelling perspective. I was going to use a set of Dragon figures I've had for years in a small diorama. The set is supposed to depict a group in the battle for Berlin, however one is wearing an Oak Parka.
NOW, given that the battle for Berlin took place around April would those involved still be wearing cold weather gear. AND could someone be wearing a Parka if he has retreated from the East.

Most of the winter parka's went east as far as I'm aware, but obviously some ended up in the west. I've seen (somewhere ) a pic of yanks happily trying on winter parka's, the pic was reputed to have been taken late 1944 or very early 1945.

I have an original photo that features some British RA gunners. One is wearing a splinter Parka.
There is a famous photo of a Brit para in a sumpf parka used in many books.
They are both army not SS patterns.
There were parkas in the west, just do the research and try and find out if your unit had them.
Chances are if they SS they didnt but there are always exceptions.
Never say never, try usual and unusual?

On a side note, parkas are remarkably comfy pillows when stuffed inside a plain white laundry bag and you're trying to get a few minutes sleep in the front seat of a Land Rover going home after a cold wet morning of British airborne troops attacking you left right and centre.
I place the blame squarely on their radio man, the b*st*rd was just too good at co-ordinating everything.......

You were lucky I was getting rid of the Bren team on my right hand side before I turned on you!
Anyway, Sumpftarn is not generally associated with SS,no matter what front they were fighting.
