This is all good stuff, shows the research that has been done and for many continues to be done.
What troubles me is the increase in those who enter the hobby having done no research and who's only concession to research is to ask questions here on topics covered many times before or to let the dealers do the research for them.
That is a pet hate for me, DdR, Dealer done Research. Because it's in the catalogue or on the web page does not make it right or correct.

A lot of our research has come from original manuals, over the years I have collected quite a few,but they are quite fragile now.Reprints can be obtained from the Naval & Military press and I think Nick Morigi doe's some. Some examples

Jon just a thought

Surely that would necessitate someone learning to speak or at least read German? Too much like hard work if you ask me (well not me but if I were a noob - then that would be me... if you know what I mean)

For guidance you need guides...... and apart from the established few I see very little evidence of it these days....... Perhaps this topic is better than I thought and could be used by people to get some idea of what to do and how to do it?

Thats a very fair comment, but as a newbie I have found very little information on the role Im pertraying, which is SS Feldgendarme so asking questions here from knowledgable people is helpful. Likewise, I ask questions regarding Helferins as there is again very sparse info out there.... and this is for my wife not that I like to cross dress!

I do think there can be some very harsh comments made here against new reenactors at times, not me personally as everyones been great but on a forum its hard to tell the genuine reenactor from the promenading farbs. Obviously with the internet people can get lazy instead of going out and looking in museums, buying books and visiting the actual places where the war took place. I prefer the latter but the net is very handy and especially these forums.

Yes a knowledge of german is a help and mine is terrible but the reprints I believe are in english,in the news letters they printed commands in phonetic german, failing that they could just look at the pictures

I find this site has some helpful translations for the non German speakers.
http://www.germanmanuals.com/index.html
MLRS also have some translations though they take some finding on the site.

im crap at trying to learn foreign languages i went to night school to try and learn German a few years ago bt to no prevail. Some people are better than others at picking up languages and the younger you are the easy it is by all accounts.

IMHO newbies should be guided by their group but the problem we have at the moment that we have some many reenactors who are independant and not with a group so they are doing what they please or what they think is the correct way.

Thats if they take the good advice given to them. Is that why they are individuals or not in groups as they cant take constructive criticism or like to follow a set of rules and regs.

We all can give info and advice for newbies till he cows come home but will they all listen. how many now best and woant to do their own hing.
