Officers or other ranks?
either way it would be the standard SS belt buckle appertaining to that rank.

SS should be worn. If you are doing a 1939 or very early 1940, yo do see the occasional police buckle in use, but not very often.

Why oh why do in 2010, with a hugh amount of research at our fingertips (and Dave aka Feldjager available on here!), must we still see reenactment groups (Heer/W-SS whatever) portraying operational FG's carrying rank below Unteroffizier/SS-Unterscharfuhrer?

Before we get period pictures of FG's of lower rank being posted - YES I know there were lower ranks in FG units. However, most were Drivers, Cooks etc and not operational Field Policemen as portrayed by most FG reenactors.

If you have FG's in your reenactment group, then why not start insisting that they wear the appropriate rank that is most common and typical to the role that they are portraying?

Please don't try and tell me that reenactor politics regarding 'awards' of rank etc can be taking precedence over historical accuracy or I might just stamp my feet and cry like a girl!!

Dave - am I right or can you shed any further light on what seems to be a common reenactor error?

Yes, I would be inclined to strongly agree. Look at the Kriegsstärkenachweisungen for each trupp type, in each case the vast majority of the allocated manpower was from the Unteroffiziere stellgruppe:
Type a: 2 officers, 29 NCOs, 2 enlisted
Type b: 3 officers, 58 NCOs, 3 enlisted
Type c: 1 officer, 29 NCOs, 7 enlisted (in this type they were also bicycle messengers as well).

The Unteroffiziere stellgruppe spans the ranks of Obergefreiter to Stabsfeldwebel. From examining photos (I have a document I wrote a while ago for my book on the allocation of rank based on photos and other documents), and the vast majority are held at either Unterfeldwebel, Feldwebel or Oberfeldwebel. From veteran interviews it would appear that those of Unteroffizier and below were used essentially for menial work such as point duty, sentry/guard duties and admin tasks.
