The men in the above photographs are Luftwaffe field division sharpshooters, they often used the ZF41 scope. Regular army snipers did too, but mainly in training. Difference between a sniper and a sharpshooter in the german armed forces? Completely different subject and complicated.

If you are not too fussed on what rifle you convert, you can put together a sniper rifle for about the same as you would a zf41 scoped rifle.

With the American exchange rate now, you can get scopes and mounts quite cheaply.

I've decided to invest in a Zf39 scope. Now I just need to know what mount to get.

Isn't the question rhetorical? Surely it's a Zf39 mount?

Grinkman, there are a few different mounts. I'd go with a high turret mount!

Depends on what access you have to machine equipment or a gunsmith.

High and low turret mounts usually require the scope to be soft soldered on as the scope can move about in the rings with no provision to tighten them. Usually the bases are soft soldered to the rifle, but since they are attached with screws aswell, you can forgo the soft soldering:

Low turret mounts:

Unless you want the split ring type high turret mounts, but they were quite rare by accounts:

A long side rail mount needs a specific maker and date of rifle (Gustloff Werke (bcd code) from 44 onwards) since it mounts to an enlarged side wall:

(This one comes with a repro zf39 scope)
http://cgi.ebay.com/ZF39-Sniper-Scope-J ... 1e5c9d3aa0

There is also a single claw mount, but these needs to be soft soldered to the rifle:

http://cgi.ebay.com/BNZ-Single-Claw-sni ... 255ed11d72

Objective claw mount system, although the mount blocks need to be dovetailed into the rifle:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Double-Claw-sniper- ... 2308780e01

Double claw mount system, but repros are not really made of these mounts, so you would have to track down originals:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Complet-german-WWII ... 1c18484717

Looking at the dimensions given on this listing, it should fit a zf39 scope, but they would have to be soft soldered to the scope body.

Claw mounts were particulary used by the SS.

The easiest to do would be a short side rail mount as its only 3 screws and screw caps to get a scope in:

Hope it helps,

Paul.

Seen the stuff "Battleflag Militaria" has for sale in the flesh and they are modern put togethers!

You could do it yourself for less than half the price!
