My unit has just agreed to hold a training weekend in the upcoming month. This is our first one so I'm wondering, what should we be focusing on? We are a late war unit Heer 1944-45 so what applies to us? Thanks in advance.

Training Weekends?

Re: Training Weekends?
Most fun and instructive is a combination from all aspects (1 hour each). We had a trainingweekend previous weekend with the following:
- Unterricht (theorylessons about tactics, weapons, uniform etc)
- Sport
- Hinlegen
- Formale Ausbildung mit und ohne Gewehr (Drill)
- Schiessen (rifleshooting with a K98)
- Nakampf ausbildung (bayonet training, hand-to-hand combat)
- Stielhandgranat werfen (handgrenade trowing lesson)
- Geländeausbildung (fieldtactics)
And each day ended with a "Putz- und Flickstunde" (cleaning rifles and uniform)

Thank you Rednas, I was hoping to get a reply from one of the members in your group.rednas wrote:Most fun and instructive is a combination from all aspects (1 hour each). We had a trainingweekend previous weekend with the following:

Re: Training Weekends?
I'm by no means an expert so feel free to ignore the following suggestions;
Firstly, try to break the day up into short and different exsercises/disciplines as it will prevent people from getting bored - if you sit and talk for 3 hours about the strengths and weaknesses of a K98 everyone will be asleep
For instance when covering weapons handling/training, why not break up into smaller groups and have a ten minute session on several different types of weapon whereby the groups rotate between the weapons available over an hour, eg 15 mintues K98, 15 minutes MG42, 15 minutes MP44 etc
try to put into practice what you have taught sooner rather than later, eg after the field craft section go through what you have learned practically with feed back on what was good and what was not quite up to scratch, then put this into a real scenario with a tactical patrol for instance.
With really exciting stuff like drill and marching try to break it down into short regular sessions, eg if you have say 5 different disciplines to cover in a day, march from one training area to another rather than spending 4 hours square bashing - it will stay in your memory better if you chip away at it rather than flooding your fragile young minds with tonnes of information.
Later in the war the training was still to a standard but there was less of it due to time constraints and replacement requirements, so don't get too bogged down on perfecting 1 subject.
Hope that helps, I'm sure there are far better qualified and experienced people on this forum that could give better advice.
good luck.
Matt

I agree with you, a good social after all the running around is a must. It bonds your unit together!grenmartens wrote:and BEER!

Dont forget weapons handling and safety.
Yes, this wont be "to the book" period wise, but its an absoloute must for new and experienced members alike.
