You can put the canteen in the freezer half-full of water inside (not completely full, as the water gets more volume when it freezes into ice, and this could break the canteen). Later you take the canteen out of the freezer and wait for the ice to melt

This is what I heard from other reenactors, didn't try it myself, so I don't know if it's really effective

Somebody bashed off something hard and its quite a large dent. It happened at a show. I know they have dents just not huge ones!!

I have used a piece of dowel, just small enough diameter to fit through the top, rounded on the end, as a lever to gently coax dents out of a couple of feldflaschen.

Our "Spiess" has used this freezer technique and according to him it works; however the whole bottle came out round and nice; aren't they supposed to be a little flat on the "backside"?

Yes, they are supposed to be curved inwards at the back. I have one that has apparently been treated to that kind of repair before I got it and it's REALLY hard to get it back to the correct shape.

Oh you mean 'dents', Mike, as in concave bumps, thought you meant 'dents' as in false teeth! :? :) Try the freezer method as mentioned. However take it in small doses as too much can 'split' the flask - happened to me with a vintage water bottle.
