Map Case

The leather map cases, are they made from the pebbled type of leather or smooth please? Reason I ask is Ive got one, and want to be sure its the right type.
Also, obviously pencils go in the front but whatgoes in the rectangular holder on the front, a ruler?

Black (Mainly) Pebbled leather - Pencils, an eraser, a ruler, protractor, compass can go in it. The raised oblong pouch with the little leather lace is for an eraser. The flat long pouch on the left was for a 15cm (6") wooden or steel rule. Be careful of the leather suspension loops as with rough use they can tear.

Pebbled leather was used for the issue type (allegedly to reduce glare!), though private purchase ones were available and I've seen a few with smooth leather.

The rectangular holder on the front right (as you look at the case front) is for the deckungswinkelmesser - this is essentially a goniometry device for measuring elevation of terrain and for adjusting indirect fire. Originals are expensive, but the post war ones are visually identical (save for the NSN and the scale is in mils) and function in exactly the same way.

Cheers for that guys, the one I ordered stated it was pebbled but Ive been sent a smooth one... I have found an original in brown with the smooth finish but not black. So, if I keep it will I be farbie or should I ask for a pebbled one
Got myself a period map and some pencils... being an FG I doubt the straps will wear too much as Im not that active!
