would GD want to appear in a film?

Post by ambitious student »

hello all, my name's tom and im a student, and my friends and i are going to be making an independant wwII film this summer (hopefully). the question is, would anyone in GD be interested in appearing in it? its not going to be a saving private ryan by any means, but we're having a look around for anyone at all who might be interested and could add a little authenticity. we're not asking for anything other than some german uniforms on film, so if anyone is interested, dont worry about having to make commitments of any sort, we can take care of anything necessary. so, are there any potential stars out there? the more questions anyone has for us, the better! cheers!

couple of questions for you

are you paying the going rate for re-enactors for film work ?
are you covering expenses ?

if the answer is no to both of these then i think you are going to stuggle to get anyone to appear in your films ( re-enactors anyway )

there is a going rate that most groups work to ( decent groups anyway ) because it is not just the uniforms but the expertise that you are getting

sorry if this isn't what you wanted to hear but i do not believe that this group would or should sell itself short of what you would pay for any other decent group

let us know what you have in mind and we will discuss it

thanks for the interest guys. bad news first of all, indie film = no money = no pay. ultimately the goal is to get this film into festivals like the edinburgh international film festival and build creative recognition, not to make money. this really is just if anybody wants to do it off their own bat. after all we are only looking for one or two people. that said, we will do whatever's necessary to make sure that anyone who does get involved doesnt have to shell out for any expenses whatsoever.

as for clashing with shows etc, have no worries about that. at the moment we're trying to keep as flexible as possible concerning things like shooting times, and re-enactor involvement would hopefully be kept to 2 or 3 days at most. in the same way, we're not setting in stone precisely what the involvement would be, as depends on what's possible. while we're at it, can i find out where anyone interested is based?

last of all, we found out about GD from http://www.wwiireenacting.co.uk/, and sadly no it isnt a porn film

sorry mate but i personally am not interested
the rates for re-enactors are there for a purpose and that is so that we do not get used for cheap film labour and doing anything for nothing these days would set a precedent that other film makers would expect to be able to use.......sorry
i have a feeling that any other group would tell you the same thing and besides even if you were paying asking for just one or two out of the group would not be fair on anyone else.

i understand exactly what you're concerned about, and i agree, but i just want to re-emphasise the small scale of this film. we're not trying to enlist the group, this is an offer for anyone who would like to join in entirely voluntarily in the name of adventure. this would have absolutely no effect on the film re-enacting circuit whatsoever or cause conflict due to pay rate concerns. everyone currently working on the film isnt going to receive anything; like 9 out of 10 indie films this is funded by ourselves. if in the end there are no interested parties in GD or any other group, we'll simply look to assembling costumes/equipment ourselves and make the best of it.

hmmm, I am not dissenting here, I'll certainly go along with the stripey sleeves and toe the line.

however I will just say that I get nothing from reenacting the shows we go to, and each of them has been a commercial event with the exception of Schweinskopf. Indeed, its a right pain in the ass, and costs lots of money, and that is after all the outlay for the kit.

I have never asked once for any money for them, and would feel churlish for doing so. Indeed at the last show I had to pay £20 for cammo netting and stuff! like I'll ever see my 1/5th share of that netting! unlikely! My share of that netting will probably go to getting vehicles and bigger props and that is exactly as it should be.

My guess is the burton show isn't giving us any money for appearing as an exhibit, so why not let them come over and do their 5 minutes of filming of us while we are there? That means that if ever their film is a commercial success they can be sued by the event organisers (and lets face it they have an army of lawyers), and in the event of it not being a success no one will know. I haven't signed anything from coors saying I cant be filmed while on their 40s day!

that way, we can help out an up and coming film student (who may, incidentally go on to great things or at least buy us a beer).

Its easy to pontificate about money, but I am not in this for money, and I for one feel positive about helping some guy out with his hammy film.

When we did jersey, we didn,t ask for anything apart from expenses{which didn,t include beer money} :?
At the end of the day he is not the beeb or itv, just someone who is semi normal{he is a student} trying too better himself.
If he where making a fortune out of it, it would be different. It cost the jersey film crew about £30,000.
So if he pays expenses, and depending where it is,it should be up too the individual.

Thanks guys, the interest you have shown has been superb.

As i write this I'm trying to put together a load of info on the details of what we're hoping to do, so when thats distributed it should let you know anything you need to.
We hope to get to Burton, but its certain we can get to at least one of the shows before the end of summer for a chat.
Like i say, expenses will be looked after and beer is guaranteed :)
It might be the case that we cant do filming at an event on the day, but at this stage thats something that can be easily worked out.

Keep an eye on this thread, if we have any big announcements they'll come here first, and we'll have the details out to you in a week or so. Any questions, please ask!
Cheers
