Wearing of belts?

Post by Steiner »

Something that has been at the back of my mind for a while - what was the proper protocol regarding the wearing of belts indoors ? I have seen a number of photos and footage where officers sometimes are not wearing belts.

On duty an enlisted man wore his belt. Belts were taken away as a visible sign of punishment. A belt was and still is in many armies, a sign of being under arms.

Dunno about the officer angle - I've seen it on many photos too. It is something I keep meaning to research so this is the impetus to do so.

I first noticed this (i.e. officer not wearing a belt) in Secret Army, I think it was. At the time, I thought it was farby, but then I noticed it in a lot of photos - e.g. Hitler and his generals poring over maps.

Hq staff there would be no need of the to wear belt and cap to show they are on duty as they are working at the HQ
I have found this in the SS regs the belt like Herr Grink said was removed when under arrest but those also allowed out with out a belt were soldiers in Military hospital or Convalescing

What i have been told and have gone by is that, when you sit down at the table, you take your belt off and place it on the back of your chair.
