Thanks from my Father

Post by Crazy Feldgendarme »

Many of you got to see and meet my Father at Victory, i spoke to him late Saturday night and he asked me to pass on his thanks for the curtesy and consideration shown him by ALL groups he visited during the day.

I did manage to find out a little more of the background to his war, it turns out after Dunkirk he went to the Para,s and was Military Inteligence flying to and landing in occupied France delivering messages and equipment, it was whilst in France on a mission he was wounded in a firefight with us naughty Germans.

His one concern prior to attending was that we "glorified war" i am happy to report he is now planning to attend more events next year (health permitting).

So folks we have a convert (90 year old). I add my thanks to his to all of you.

THANK YOU  8) :D :D

Dave - Only just seen this thread - Your Dad is a wonderful gentleman. So sharp and on the ball - He has grasped this mad hobby alright. I only spent a few minutes chatting to him but I got the vibe that he[s a special old bugger! (A bit like someone else I know)

Like so many veterans - he doesn't see himself as special - but he does know he gave up his tomorrow for our today..... and lost some mates along the way.

Thank him for me and tell him the privelige was all mine.

It was an honour and a pleasure to meet your Dad. 91? Must have been a good vintage?
It is important that we tell these old boys that there are still those who value them and what they did for us.

Thanks all.

The old lad says he will attend some shows next year health permitting.
He loved the Enigma Machine (mind when he said he knew nothing about it i got the feeling he was playing a little game).

Have to say he walked the legs off me (i was bloody sore next day). he had had enough around 2.15 so i walked him to his car which he couldnt find, took an hour to find it by which time he was getting a little distressed.

Have to say once or twice there was a trickle of tears down his face (good or bad memories, who knows).

I dont know if he will say much more since as Paul says he doesnt see what he did as any thing special, it is a measure of the man that he once said "we did what we did so you can do what you do" simple logic but very much the point i think.

Cheers now
Dave (Cooke the younger)

It was a pleasure meeting your Father, albeit very briefly Dave. A true Gentleman and no mistake.

Dave,
It was a pleasure and an honour to spend some time with your Father. I hope those tears were borne from the effort we all put in to keeping the likes of his struggles & history alive in todays "throw away" culture.
I look forward to our next meeting.
Regards to all,
Roy

Dave (Cooke the younger)

to be realy honest dave so did i after what u told me
i tried to keep it as simple as poss ......
but it seemed to me not a normal vets reaction to the machine ......
ive spoken to many vets who genuinely where surprised at seing one
he seemed soo calm ..even with his ripe age he seemed like he had seen it all before ...who knows

if he has then hope in a few years he will let ya know
