WWII EVENT FORT RICHARDSON, TEXAS FEB 21 & 22 2009

Post by cckw »

Glenn Barnett, Park Ranger, says that public response has been "overwhelming" concerning the upcoming WW II Living History and WW II ETO Show Battle on 02/20-22/09 at Ft. Richardson State Park, 228 State Park Road, in Jacksboro, Texas. (940) 567-3506. The fort is expecting a big turnout. German reenactors invited and needed for the WW II ETO show battle.
The event will focus mainly on WW II Living History, Vehicles and an ETO Show Battle but ALL era historical military displays, vehicles and impressions are welcome. In November 1940, an artillery battalion of the 131st Regiment of the 36th Division (the T-Patchers) Texas National Guard mustered in at the fort, took a photo, mobilized and shipped out to the Pacific Theatre where they were captured by the Japanese at the start of WW II. Many in the "Lost battalion" perished in capitivity while working on Japanese railroads in the jungles. One area Veteran from this battalion has been invited to attend the February 2009 event which will include another photograph by the reenactors at the fort. Not in 69 years has there been WW II "troops " and equipment at the fort.
The fort is providing three meals this weekend and there is a barracks, a hospital, a guardhouse and a magazine to house reenactors. Modern camping with RV hook ups and authentic camping is available. Pitch a tent, rack in the barracks or drive your RV. Motels are just a mile away, too.
An old railroad bed with an iron truss bridge, scrub brush, trees and ruins will provide the area for the show battle. PLENTY of room to drive military vehicles and set up camps and displays. Please try and make this first time event.
The park has basically given us 'carte blanche' to do our thing(s). It's an easy drive up to Jacksboro, hardly any traffic out in those parts. The town and Chamber of Commerce is onboard and they WANT us. Please try and make this event as we remember and honor our Veterans and especially those of the "Lost Battalion".

Update: Fort Richardson WWII Event (Feb 21 & 22)

Fort Richardson Living History weekend on Feb 20-21st. Fort Richardson is just North of Ft. Worth in Jacksboro. The Fort has a really great history with elements of the 36th Division "Lost Battalion" mustering there in 1940 prior to being shipped out into the Pacific and being captured by the Japanese. The fort has bunks for around 30 people and there is plenty of room for camping. They have also promised 3 square meals on Saturday, and possibly breakfast on Sunday, firewood and firepits for warmth. Will be a great time to come out, set up a display, bring a vehicle or visit with the crowd

If ya can, bring a weapon and be prepared to fight. We may have a boatload of jerries to contend with. Three squares served by the park on Saturday. Barracks, Intreperative Center open Fri and Sat. night at the fort. Hospital open for displays-has a large porch. Battle area along the berm on the northside of the fort grounds. A military vehicle convoy will depart Frisco, TX Fri. morning and gather other units along the way (Denton, Decatur, Bridgeport) along Hwy 380 and will arrive Ft. Richardson app. 1400 hrs Fri. The local VFW on the square has invited us to drop in Fri and/or Sat. night. Mexican, Italian, drug store counter, local dairy queen type drive in and other exteries located near fort. Motels and modern camping and RV hook ups all available. Come enjoy the hospitality and impress the public with your collections/knowledge of WW II or any other historic military era. PLENTY of room - go to google earth and see for yourself. A short ceremony will be held at the fort to commerate the "Lost Battalion", Battery F, 2nd Battalion, 131st Regiment, 36th Division (T-Patchers) who mustered in at the fort, took a photograph, sailed for the Pacific and ultimately wound up on Java where they were captured by the Japs and forced to build jungle railroads, Many perishing in the process.

Im relaying this info hot off the press via~email updates from the local MVPA Arrowhead Texas chapter. Hope to see a good turn out for this first time event at Fort Richardson Anyone interested in making this event with your MV or dress the part is welcome. Hope to see lots of G.I. reenactors ..
