Hauptzollampt Nurnberg

Post by Hoffman Grink »

In Nuremberg stands a grey building which houses the Hauptzollampt Nurnberg u. Zollfahndungsampt Munchen Deinstzitz Nurnberg. It also houses the Bundesampt fur Migrations u. Fluchtlinge.

It's an interesting building. I wonder what it used to be before its present use. Any ideas?

Do you mean the one on frankenstrasse with the big grey front section and red brick wings extnending left and right with loads of windows?
If so it's the original ss barracks for the city. Only
The grey middle bit is the only part. Uncle sam housed his cavalry there for a long time after the war.
If not, nope - got me there

BINGO!!!!! Got it!
Nice to know there are others out there who've been and done...... Not just managed Medal of Honour on Difficult!

That's the building - the SS-Kaserne. I was indeed meaning the Grey Central Section - And the two Quadrangles either end.

Now let me see if I can think of another obscure "landmark".........

The old NSDAP HQ? I'd prefer the Osteria (Still there but poetically enough it's an Italian Restaurant now!)

I was thinking more about the little place on Goffartstrasse in Aachen......... any ideas?

Yes, quite. There was a superb mis-translation when I went in 2009. They mentioned the fact that a new exhibition was to be built within one of the disused buildings in the future; and in their words "to educate people in the ways of National Socialism". Made me chuckle, I thought theyd spent years de-Nazifying the Germans!!!

When I worked for the US Army in Germany during the 1980's, I spent my first five years working in the old I.G. Farben Headquarters in Frankfurt am Main and my last five years working in the old RZM Headquarters in München.
