What sorts of tentage was used by German officers and their staff? I know tentsmiths makes one. Would rear echleon officers use WW1 zelts to make a full size staff tent? Could somebody please elaborate what exactly the options are?
Thank you!
Franz
German staff tents?
Re: German staff tents?
There are books written on the subject. Far too involved for a forum post. Try 'Zelte und Zeltersatzausrustungen der Wehrmacht 1935-1945' by Horst Hinrichsen VDM 2002.
editNot easy to find it would seem but there are some here; http://www.barbarossabooks.eu/zelte-und ... -7201.html
I doubt they would have used WW1 sections when the issued items were more plentiful and superior. The odd one or the use of RAD or HJ sections by troops is possible but not well recorded. Rear echelon officers were more likely to have access to proper tents or be billeted in local buildings.

Re: German staff tents?
Were tents even in use? I haven't found many evidence for it, exept only in trainingcamps and the first years on the eastern front.
Re: German staff tents?
Lots of use in N.Africa.
Get the book I have listed. Plenty of pictures of all kinds of tents in use.
Not many that look late war though there are some.

Re: German staff tents?
Late war tent photos tend to be rare, having said that tents were still be made as I have originals which are 1944 dated.
Most photos of signals and command type units tend to show them in the buildings.

Re: German staff tents?
We had a Veteran of the Grossdeutschland Division come to the Reading World War 2 airshow as a guest of 7th Kompanie GD.
As he walked thru the encampment he looked at all of the zeltbahn tents all lined up and asked "what are those" we were quite puzzled and told him they were tents made by attaching zeltbahns together. One of our members then asked him if he hadn't sleep in zelt tents during the war what did he and his gruppe sleep in he advised "we had guns so we slept in houses"

That's similar to the answer given by a FJ veteran once when asked where they slept. His answer was a mime of holding an MPi and at the same time smiling knowingly and saying "Where we wanted" (and it wasn't Gerry)
