Ratio of Heer / Waffen SS

Post by Steiner »

I've been unable to find the answer from trawling the net, so...

Roughly what was the ratio of Heer to Waffen SS troops who fought during the war?

Ten to one roughly. But if you only look at the PZ.Div the ratio was more or less of four to one.

Keep in mind with the ratio that the Waffen SS was almost only combat units, while the Heer had much more tasks next to combat and a very large part of the troops had occupation duty.

From what I remember, it was 13 million men in Heer, 1 million in Waffen-SS. But like was said, Heer was part of a large fighting force with many more things to do than just fighting.

Me???

I just fell into it lol.
If there was a Wehrmacht group out there who wanted a recruit i would join, i tried a couple
of other groups including SS but apparantly were at the time there were no vacancies so i
went to events on my instead then eventually i started my own group up, i picked the
Charlemagne unit to portray because it seemed different from the norm!!

Cheers, Peiper

I guess many people find elite units cool stuff to reenact, but it's not only with axis units
For example: With all the 101 airborne reenactors in the world the division would get 20 times it's real strength, while with other standard divisions you wouldn't fill a single company

We had to consider if in the total numbers of the WSS are considered the transfers from the Heer to the WSS (not too many) and from the redundant personnel from Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine to the WSS (quite a good number starting around 1943).

Any info :?:

Gruss!! :)

Yes Stig - as detailed in Victory Was Beyond Their Grasp. Amusing anecdote of some defiant Kriegsmarine recruits (to the 252nd VG) bursting into a KM song when on the march, after the unit had just finished singing "Westerwald".
