I think he said in the film he was going to be a soccar player after the war or something, he is the one who gets his legs blown off in the underground tunnels and later dies.
Yes, he said he'd had a trial for Schalke 04, hence, presumably, the Schalke tattoos.

I'd be interested to see if the Schalke tattoos are of period emblems, as football clubs often change their badges on a regular basis.

Here a page I scanned of "Der Kicker - Die deutsche Fußball-Illustrierte" (German football newspaper)
from 4th January 1938, showing the emblem in the right top corner.
