Eine Gruppe der Gebirgsjager

Post by mario33 »

Reading through books, I've noticed the following design of most basic organisation unit of GJ, which is

Jager Gruppe

Trying to work out the roster and weapons needed to field such a basic unit, I assumed the following:

Command:
1 Unteroffiziere - 1 MP38/40 + 1 P-08/38

MG team
1 schutze with MG34/42 and P08/P38
3 schutze - Kar98k (plus MG munitions)

Schutzen
6 schutze - Kar98k (2 supplied with mixture of ZF39/41)

Tragtiere:
2 tragtiere/schutze (Kar98k)
2 mules

In total: 13 men

Any remarks concerning any additional necessary equipment would be appreciated.

Mario I think that basic Jager Gruppe would be 11 men like the rest of the Heer ,BUT this could change for the operation at hand

Franz, each GJ Gruppe got 2 pack mules attached, which made it different from the rest of Heer :) And those two additional men were the 'tragtiere', i.e. leaders for the mules.

The a.m. info was taken from Kaltenegger various books. Will try to find a good pic for scan to prove it.

Marrio my dear like you said above the 2 were attached from the mule train so not on the permanent strength of the Jager Gruppe. The fighting unit was 11 men +2 tragtiere making the total 13 sorry I think it was my way of wrighting.

Here's to confirm.

A photo from Kaltenegger's 'German Mountain Troops in World War II - A Photographic Chronicle of the Elite Gebirgsjager', p. 38. Photo shows German training table, showing roster of 'Geb. Jager Kompanie', where it specifies each Gruppe as I described above (men, not equip).

Mario you are missing the point the Tragtiere were attached to the Jager Gruppe and not on its perminent strength they were not part of the fighting unit (11 men) But there job was to supply the 11 men as the unit would be up in the mountain and there would be a Valley echelonso the Tragtiere would supply the jager Gruppe .Once in Russia this was changed again as the role changed some what.
