Servus Bergkameraden,

Great photos! The first photo shows Knights Cross Winner Michael Pössinger (98GJR/1.GJD) shaking hands:

Great photos of Mittenwald! I was there in 1991 for the 75th anniversary of the 1.GJD!!!

Notice that in the photos none of the Gebirgsjägers are wearing sleeve or cap Edelweiss...so 1938 or earlier. Also of note, are the officers who are wearing the light-grey Bergmütze...beautiful!!!

Horrido!

Thanks Patrick- the entire album (x 2) are full of no edelweiss insignia- definitely pre 38- and quite a few shots with Austrian style tunics too. Note the kniebundhosen and long socks on a few of the jager.

Steve (Obergefreiter Hansch):
Great photos! I haven't found any Austrian uniforms in the photos yet but continue to look. The officer at the head of the column (and the reviewing officer) both appear to be wearing old-style Reichsheer tunics (with the slanted lower pockets).

The lighter grey Bergmützen worn by some of the officers is interesting. Note in the first two images the reviewing officer appears to be wearing a lighter cap in the second image (Bergfoto16) while the same officer in the first image (Bergfoto9) now appears in a darker cap. Possibly sunlight on the fabric for this officer?? The officer in the last photo (fourth from the right) also appears to be wearing a much lighter cap than his men.

Are any of these caps the older Reichsheer pattern Bergmützen? One could theorize that officers would have been serving for some period of time before the introduction of the new Wehrmacht-pattern uniforms and this time period would see a mix of old and new?

Servus Maleme,

A great family portrait! Thanks for sharing.

It is very interesting that the Oberjäger on the left is wearing a M40 tunic, while the Jäger next to him and the Obergefreiter, on the right, are wearing M36 tunics.

Horrido!

Patrick

..yes that was one of the first things I noticed!

It also appears on the face of the younger brother...the Jäger... that he has a lot to live up too with his decorated older and more confident brothers!

Best wishes, Paul.

Servus Paul,

Can you make some closer scans of their Bergmützen? I really like the cut of the Obergefreiter's cap...and the Oberjäger's cap looks like it has 4 buttons on the turn-down flaps...really strange.

Berg Heil!

Dear Patrick,

unfortunately it does not look like 4 buttons but unusual marks on the photograph. What do you think?

Here are the photographs:
