Mostly because they didnt need them. Mountain M31 rucksack got the carry straps integrated, including pouches suspenders.

What else would you need the Y-straps for ? ;) Most of the stuff was packed into the rucksack or strapped onto that.

Tthey did, but not with M31 rucksack. Mostly in units used in traditional infantry role, esp. on the Eastern Front.

I have some photos of GJ using Y straps and the M31 rucksack I supose that the are expecting combat and would leave the rucksacks in a rear area .
One that SS Nord used alot was the bread bag strap to support the belt look at the guy on the LH front this by the way is not the only photo I have seen of this way in use

I supose that they had to begin using Y-straps when the use of internal suspenders was abolished by a regulation in mid-war. But as always happens, regulations are made to not follow them!

It is possibly hard to climb with y-straps. I guess habituation became tradition. :)

I'm agree with Mario!!

If you "wear" the M31 rucksack you dont' need "Y" straps because you wear the gas maks and thin, the toold, the things you carry in the bread bag (or the bread bag), the "meat can" and the zeltham inside the M31 rucksack (in fact, your belt just should carry the ammo puches, the bayonet and the canteem "holded" by the M31 rucksack front suspenders)!

But, normally, when gebirgsjägers were used used in traditional infantry roles, they keep theirs M31 rucksack in the rear equelons and wear "standart" infantryman equipment, including "Y" straps !!

Soory I would like to say: "M31 rucksack integrated straps)!" instead "M31 rucksack front suspenders)!"

Weren't Gebirgsjager issued with padded Y straps , which had an extra link/loop as well , due to the fact they had to carry more equipment ? :?:

Grüß Di' Bergkameraden,

No padded Y-straps were used by Gebirgsjägers during the war. The ones that you see for sale are post-war Austrian types.
