The group had a great time at the Essex MVT show last weekend. Although small in terms of re-enactment groups compared to the likes of Bovington and Kelmarsh it has lots of potential for the future and the organizers really couldn't do enough for us which was quite refreshing.

Nick Halling was on site and kindly took some snaps of us in our trench which I thought i'd share. More of his and the ones that the group took as I get through them, but for now...

Yes it was a 'dirty weekend' this one which I quite enjoyed, also nice to ditch the tunics and do shirt sleeves for a bit of a change.

Some more, this time the aged ones...

Again the Halling stable produces evocative and realistic photos - The subject matter lives up to its usual standard of presentation and UNIFORMITY. I f***ing hate you b*****ds!

Small tip for the future. Soak two or three logs in a bucket of water by the fire (so it doesn't freeze) Upon retiring for the night - put a dry log in the bottom of the stove and stack two or three wet ones above it. Close the stove up completelyThe dry log burns, drying out the wet logs and producing steam (hot) the lower logs dry out enough to catch fire etc. This slows down the burning process, cuts down on smoke and keeps a steady heat all night........ In the morning have a load of small dry sticks to rekindle fire and away you go.
Anyway you slept in TENTS in a recorded -13 at Ashby in March - whassup widja? (FOOOK THAT WAS CO-O-O-O-LD!)

Thank you all for the kind comments and your excellent suggestion Paul, only problem was that the water supply froze! Fortunately Karl had foresight to fill our water containers so we had more than enough safely stored. Mind you the bottle of frozen coke we found Sunday morning didn't fair so well, it just needed some rum or bacardi

More pictures of our training weekend have been uploaded to Nicks site.

Over the weekend, our instructors lectured on gas equipment and how to use it, the FF33 field telephone and how to set communications between positions , a practical lesson on WW2 German assault tactics, an interesting talk on what information went into the Soldbuch and the inevitable bit of parade, square bashing and light and heavy weapons training.

Alongside the main pictures of the weekend, Nick also also managed to squeeze the taking of some nice portrait pictures into the weekend as well some of which (even though he'll kill me for loosing the detail :) ) i've made black and white in a effort to emulate the original wartime ones we often see.

And with that the 2010 offensive draws to a close for the group. Good to meet up with a few of you over the season, look forward to attending some great shows and working with more of you in 2011.

As ever, we are always on the look out for new members to swell our ranks, so if you fancy a portrayal of a Grossdeutschland Shutzen on the Eastern front, please get in touch.

Anyway, some pics...

As some of the more regular users of our unit forum may have noticed, a few things have changed over the past month or so which have been frustrating to say the least and totally out of our hands.

In short, the forum hosts have changed and the new hosting company seem to have put us on a super slow server, added video advertising which also slows things down and finally informed us that our version of forum will be phased out in 2011 at some point in favour of 'version 3'.

So as a result and in an order to keep this well used resource available (and to avoid problems in the future) we've taken the decision to have a new forum built and have it privately hosted which should stop all the problems.

If any of the users of the old forum would like to move over to the new one, the address is:

http://www.gdrecon.co.uk/forum

Please find us over there from now on.

Finally, thank you for your support and input our forum over the last five years and we very much look forward to seeing you all again at the new place.

Our March 1943 themed display at COAM recently saw the Shutzen of the Reconnaisance battalion Grossdeutschland resting and re-grouping in preparation for the battle of Kursk (Operation Citadel) which would start in a few weeks.

Some were out engaged in Anti-Partisan patrols and alongside them was a member of the Kaminksi brigade acting as an interpreter and supplying his knowledge of the local area.

Some of the pictures from this great event are tickling through now, so I thought i'd share some - The first 6 are supplied courtesy of Dan Bullock.

The group attended the 'Being There' event at Whittington Barracks in Staffordshire a couple of weekends ago. Despite heavy rain, we managed to muddle through and make the most of the museum's excellent trench system for both our display and our fighting positions in the 2 battles that took place each day.

The pictures we managed to get snapped in-between things have now been uploaded to the site - to see them please go to:

http://www.gdrecon.co.uk/galleries/whit ... /index.htm

Next up for us are the big shows of the Summer, starting at Bovington, then Kelmarsh, onto Broadlands and finishing at the Victory Show in September.

May I take this opportunity to remind you that the group are always looking for motivated recruits that are keen to build an accurate portrayal of the men of the Aufklärungs Abteilung Grossdeutschland.

If you like one you see and fancy taking part in our events as a member of the group, please get in touch via pm or at: info@gdrecon.co.uk
