A VERY IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO PASS ON.

Post by FMROMMEL »

I have just got back from the Nares AGM and the guest speaker was the Chairman of the Association of Chief Police Constables. He was very good and is also a re-enactor.

The VCR bill was talked about and you can read about it in the VCR section.

HOWEVER HE DID HAVE A VERY IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO PASS ON.

In Skirmish over the last couple of issues an advert for a RE-ENACToRS ID CARD for £7.00 has been published.

THIS CARD IS WORTHLESS IN THE EYES OF THE POLICE. IT MEANS NOTHING AND WILL NO BE ANY GOOD TO ANYONE AS THE ISSUING BODY HAD NO LEGAL WARRANT TO DO SO. IN FACT HE WAS MORE CONCERNED WITH THE FACT YOU WOULD HAVE GIVEN YOUR NAME AND ADDRESS TO SOMEONE WHO COULD SELL IT TO THE HIGHEST BIDDER. TELL YOU MEMBERS NOT TO BUY IT.

Howard Giles is mentioned in the ad, he has NOT been and is not any part of this scam,

Thanks for this Wayne - As pointed out on the Pointy stick forum - Laurie may have good intentions but the road to Hell is paved with them! For just £3.00 more Axis boys and girls can have an AFRA one and it comes with £5,000,000 Third Party Public Liability Insurance amongst other things..... It doesn't claim to protect the wearer and is a lot more useful for shows etc. 8)

We've had our own version of an ID card in the SBG for years now. When the Anti-social behaviour act came into being in 2003 we also formed our own firearms cards as well.

Legally speaking they don't hold much water, as such, but it would show to a police officer stopping our member that he belonged to a bona fide re-enactment group, as opposed to an ordinary yob or chav waving his gun about in the streets.

When I read about the aforementioned cards originally It was obvious to me that they were totally worthless, and also a huge con at £7 per throw.

However, as stated, avoid the £7 cards like the plague.

Did I say wearer? I meant bearer!
As Kev says - Most groups have had some kind of card for years..... AFRA also has the "firearms excuse" card and combines it now on the reverse of the membership card.
Ours has been "tested" just once and it saved the guy from something more serious. Also helped that the magistrate hearing the case had actually heard of and seen our group...... Won't go into detail but an ex member fell foul of the law and if he hadn't had a legitimate excuse for owning what he had he would have got a custodial. As it was he did receive a penalty but much less than it should have been.... He made a daft mistake and paid for it..... over four years ago now..... I believe he is a Trappist Monk in Ulan Bator now!
