Chris Howard - Hoffman, FoxBakerCharlie

Post by Hoffman Grink »

Sadly Chris Howard has died. He had been suffering from a long term illness and knew he was terminal. He fought it stoically and was a very brave individual. During his active re-enacting, he was an enthusiatic and knowledgeable character - He lent tremendous input to all he did - For a period he took over the reins of Just Ordinary Men and latterly was a valued member of Das Heer.

I am profoundly sad to learn of his demise. He was a man of great character and integrity - I spoke with him, worked with him on projects and enjoyed all contacts I had with him. He was of that rare breed that comes along all too infrequently.

Tonight I will raise a glass and toast Chris. Travel well old fellow. You will be missed.

I've just seen it reported on Pozzi too Ash. Chris was a smashing feller. I am proper down to hear of this - although inevitable I didn't think he was so close to the end. Such was his fortitude. At least the sun was shining when he left....... I think he would have liked that rather than a dull miserable day. Doesn't make it any better and his family must be devastated.

Very sad. Only met Chris twice, last time this year in June.
Always seemed a great guy.

Met Chris a few times, at various events. An absolute gent, with a great sense of humor.

Like others, i knew he was ill, but our conversations led me to almost hope that he would be ok, or certainly not this bad. A real loss.

Our thoughts and condolences to his friends and family.

I have resisted up to now posting until this was properly confirmed.

This was done this afternoon when I spoke to Chris’s mum. Chris will be greatly missed by his family his friends and our group.

Chris had been involved in re-enactment for over 30 years; I believe he had done Napoleonic, home guard, Just Ordinary Men, and the Blandford Boys. At this point he gave it all up because he knew his illness was preventing him from doing the hobby that he loved so much, in a small way I’m glad we threw him a lifeline with Das Heer because he grabbed the opportunity with both hands.

In this his final year he wanted to do as many events as possible, unfortunately he only managed one, the Great Central Rail Way, and the fact that he could not get to any of the others greatly frustrated him.

I was also privileged to co –organize with him what we hoped would be good living history events at Fort Amherst, this historical place played an important part in Chris’s life.

I shared the details of this site with his mum as they are very appreciative of the comments left by fellow re-enactors.
Chris’s funeral will be in Hearn Bay in about 2 weeks, more information will follow on this.

Rest in peace my friend. You were a valuable friend when I first began re-enacting, we shared lots of memories of great times when I saw you at GCR this year. You will be missed by so many people but you will forever be in my memory. I am honoured and privileged to have known such a great man and to have been your friend.

Das Reich will be honouring Chris at our regimental dinner at Levisham. A place setting will be left empty in honour of our fallen and a toast to his life and friendship. Its the least we could do for a good man and friend.

Really, really sad to hear of this. When I first started reenacting I had and still have a real interest in Signals and it was always a pleasure to bump into Chris, as we would spend many a time discussing the merits and pitfuls of both Axis and Allied Radio Comms...

Sleep well my friend.....you'll be sorely missed.

After much discussion, we have closed Chris’s profile on our website.

http://www.dasheer.org/profiles_1.html

The profiles are a mix of fact and fiction relating to each individual. Knowing Chris as well as I did we believe the fitting end is one of which he would have approved, for us it mirrors the courageous attitude that he applied in real life to his terminal condition.
