The French government just put up plans that indicate they try to build windmills on the D-Day beaches.
In 2011, Port Winston of Arromanches is still very much in the lime light. It is being targeted for a complex project of 100 offshore wind turbines towering 150 meters resting on concrete bases weighing 4,000 tons. These enormous wind engines will be seen from all the landing beaches:
Gold: The English, Juno: The Canadian
Sword: The Franco-British and Omaha: The American.
With no exception our organizations regard this as an invasion of sacred grounds where so many warriors gave their lives.
Help out and sign the petition, as it means a lot to a lot of good British Veteran Friends I have. Takes one minute of your time!

Re: D-day beaches, the French want to build windmills there!
Im sorry but is this the total load of bollocks posted on the other forum?
They aren't building them on the beaches, i heard they were 10 miles out, hardly an issue is it? If they built them on the beaches they wouldn't be off shore would they?
A story out of nothing

At least it is not a nuclear power station... They are quite fond of them in a typically Gallic shortsighted way.

out of interest i did a search online to see how you calculate the distance to the horizon, would seem that a 6ft tall person stood down by the sea on the beaches would see the horizon around 3 miles away, now the turbines will be 7 to 10 miles off shore. Not exactly right in your face are they

You can see the cliffs of Dover from France at a certain point, the English channel width at it's narrowest is 21 miles so in theory it would be possible to see them ?

all depends on height of object and height above sea level the view point is. Fact remains 7-10 miles out is not ON the beaches as some are saying. if we can't build on areas where something has happened in the past that doesn't leave us with much to do anything with.
Don't see how this is anything to do with anyone except the french since its their land.

Well said mate. And even if the turbines were inland ones, why should it be an issue? We arent talking any destruction of historical remains or the landscape - these places were mostly farmland or scrub that was fought on 65+ years ago. Its crazy that ecologically friendly means of energy should be denied just because it threatens some WW2 enthusiasts rose-tinted view of a sacred battle ground. If this was the case everywhere, as Tanaka has already said - nothing would get built in Europe. My main gripe with France is its laissez faire attitude towards the destruction of archaeology, because someone wants to build a supermarket in a specific spot. That's when petitions should be being signed. Not for this.
