Uniform Standard

Post by Hoffman Grink »

An old chestnut that goes round and around.
But its seems it's not been done here.
So - as weall seem to be able to talk with one another rather than at one another...
What do you think the standard should be for German Uniforms in re-enactment?
Time has now moved on so far that Swedish is positively prehistoric (pardon the pun)
So what should we use as our yardstick? and How do we justify the variants?
Personally I always try to instill into people - Get the standard issue kitlist... Start from shirt, trousers, tunic and add to from there. Once you have it all (standard kit) then go exotic.
BUT.... I've seen so many folks do the exotic after a couple of months and still lack basics....
What do you think?

Where should we start, what should we base it on and where should we go with it?

kit

Post by pzrwest »

I think Paul is right buy your basic uniform and basic gear then add extras like pocket fillers and gear for the impression you are doing. Since my impression is coastal artillery I started with the basic fg uniform and gear then I got all the rest of the unit's requirements. We not only have the fg uniform but the navy blues, white midi and matching matrosen mutze, we have the hbt's, being a funker I needed a radio unit(torn.fu.d2) if you look at our unit website on the kit list there is a heck of alot of required and should have stuff. But the bottom line is have the basic to start with, uniform, boots, helmet, soft cap, basic gear, and weapon. But most important is look at your units requirements and talk to the "old hands" before you buy anything can save you alot of grief buying things that they don't allow or use

It's like building a house - put the walls and roof up first, then start buying lampshades and cutlery and all that

After quite a few views and a good number of votes - Can anyone see the difference between a poll on here and a poll on "there"?

I do not want to sound patronising but in my view the average Axis re enactor tends to be a bit more clued up than the equivalent allied person.

Axis groups also have a tendency to get a bit fiesty now and again, but when the chips are down help each other.

Post by Shergar »

chris hobbs and richard underwood are a good place to start with the basic uniform and essentials , all you need in one go , and decent guys .
if you want my two pence worth

i agree basic gear then add to it
a common sense approach

Essential Kit

Post by Stuart Humphrey »

Always the best policy, get basic kit, then at least you can borrow the orginal 'Iron cross' off your pals for the beer tent....

I got the basics and added to it as I went, every event or show adds to the set. It all went wrong when I discovered boxes then zeltbahn, the kit list went....

Well that went well. Thanks to those who voted.

So - given we all agree the basic kit is essential -

What is basic kit for your unit or particular serviceman?

Me? I subscribe to an imaginary Quartermaster's Store. Walk in one end and what would I end up with when I walked out the other end?

So that would be

Shirt (2)
Underpants (several)
Socks (2)
Vest?
Tunic
Trousers
Boots (ankle or jack?)
Belt
Buckle
Steel helmet
Greatcoat
Work Uniform (Denim?)
Sidecap
Bayonet
Breadbag
Gasmask and Tin
Water Bottle
Ammunition Pouches (K98)
Entrenching Tool and Carrier
Mess Tins
KFS (Spork?)
Straps Supporting
Zeltbahn
Pegs
Pole
String
Knitted Gloves

Anyone think that's too much? Or not enough? Did I miss anything?

I've acquired kit as per the entries I've seen in original Soldbuchs. Basically the same as you've listed there Paul, but with a few additional items special to the Fg role.
