Morning Gents.
First post from a newish member so please be gentle. I am currently trying to purchase a repo cap in Original ww2 wartime Italian camo to add to my collection. I have already purchased two and returned them as I could not believe it was ww2 fabric .The lastest one has cost double the two returned caps and is from a well know and respected supplier and I am baffled ! My understanding on these caps is they were made from stocks of fabric similar to Zeltbahn fabric in weight and construction , but on holding the cap to the light the weave is very open and holes can be seen unlike Zeltbahn fabric I own ?
Thank you in advance for any help, advise or information given in advance .
Regards.
Steve.

Steve ,

I presume you purchased these caps over the Internet ? Did you purchase them all from reputable dealers ? I have to say , purchasing anything unseen , online , is fraught with problems - there are so many fakes out there .

My advice ? Purchase from a dealer , at a show , if possible , so you can see the piece and get a feel for it . Failing that , go to a reputable dealer , not someone on eBay . It will cost you more , but you're more likely to get an original .

Finally , fabrics varied greatly in the 30s and 40s , and toward the end of the war , quality suffered . It may be that the cap you bought was made from an inferior fabric , and comparing it to your zelts is maybe unhelpful . Plus things deteriorate according to how they're stored . After 70+ years , your cap may be suffering the ravages of time .

Hope this helps ,

Steve

Hi Steve.
Thanks for the reply and your input, the last returned cap was bought from an American website I have used before specialising in original and repo items . The more expensive latest cap is from a UK site again specialising in original and quality german repo items. I am not an expert by any means but did a bit of research on Italian camo and was under the impression german made Italian camo caps were made out of shelter tent fabric a tight weave cotton duck type fabric ? I cannot believe this fabric can be original as the weave is so loose almost see through !
Thanks for any more input from forum members.
Steve.
