I have been working on aging my uniform and I've been trying to figure out how to remove the paint from the buttons without harming the wool on my tunic. Anything helps!

why do you want to remove the paint? you can paint over the existing, otherwise.................
the best way is to remove the button and deal with the paint problem away from the uniform, some have tried by putting gaffa tape or similar around each button but I think that's a risky way to do it should the paint stripper 'leak'.
best paint for the new buttons in Humbrol Enamel. I used this when it first came out in the 60's, my dad had a model shop!!

I cut slits in a large cardboard sheet and lay it over the tunic with the buttons stuck through the slits, saves resewing them at least

You can use a Brit style button stick and a wire brush.

In the regulations of cleaning the uniforms stood that the soldier shouldn't clean his buttons (or don't touch his buttons) when he cleaned his uniform after duty... simply to preserve the paint.

If you want your repro jacket to look authentic the first step should not be to remove paint from the buttons - but to remove the buttons from the jacket and replace them by original buttons...
