crusher stretching

Post by Panzer Wittman »

Evening all. Some advice appreciated if anyone has had this issue and successfully tackled it.
My very nice crusher unfortunately got it's inner buckram band soaked and on drying it has shrunk. It's lost about one cm all around and is now akin to wearing a tourniquet! Ok, I can always go for the jaunty angled look but I prefer my mutzen not to fall off while running around.
I have sourced a hat stretcher to try to resize it. Now, the killer question is: stretch dry, or re soak and stretch wet?

What has worked well for me over the years is get a decent football (like your old Casey ones).

Dampen the band inside your hat.

Put the deflated ball inside and blow it up until it's super tight.

Leave it for a couple of days.

If it's worked, cool, if it's needs a little more try another couple of days.

Don't leave it too long though :)

Jim do it wet, the only issue you may get is that over time it may shrink back like my m43 does.

Excatly what I was about to say. I had a shower with my cap and left it on until it dried.

Hi,
Use a Hat Jack.
About £35 to buy, but once you have it you can use it on any other cap that may need easing.

Use dry but be careful not to overdo it !!

It is indeed a hat jack I'm using. Tried dry but not stretched enough so I've re soaked the offending buckram being careful to keep the peak dry.
I've got much more play on it now. Hat jack is in place and it's in the sun drying out. Thanks again for the advice. Results to follow ...

And the results are in. Absolutely superb! It's now back to its original size. Can't recommend the hat jack highly enough. Now Def a permanent part of my kit box. Mine came from locke hatters in London but plenty other places sell them online. Cheers again all!
